One 1020 tray, 2-5 cm of medium and a 14-16 h light timer take you from seed to a 200-500 g harvest in 7-21 days.
Start with the hardware that gives the crop its rhythm: the 1020 tray, 25 x 50 cm (10 x 20 in), filled with just 2-5 cm of growing medium. The shallow fill is not a compromise — microgreens are harvested so young that deep soil would only waste medium and water.
Sow densely and evenly across the levelled surface, then press the seed into contact with the medium rather than burying it. Keep the tray evenly damp while the seed germinates; dry corners at this stage become bare patches at harvest.
Once the seedlings stand up, the tray moves under the light: a 20-40 W LED bar, 14-16 hours a day on a timer. Stems that stretch and pale are telling you the light is too weak or too far — the sizing math lives on /grow-light-shelf.
On narrow screens, swipe or scroll the plate sideways.
Water from the top, about 200-500 ml per day for an established tray, keeping the medium damp but never soaked. The failure to learn by name is damping-off: stems collapsing at the soil line in a waterlogged tray.
Cut when the first true leaves appear and the canopy stands 5-10 cm tall. Radish gets there in 6-10 days, pea shoots in 10-14, and most other microgreens inside the 7-21 day window; a healthy tray returns roughly 200-500 g per cut.
If you want a no-medium crop to run alongside the tray, the jar method on /sprouting-schedule finishes even faster.
